Your mother-in-law is your husband’s mom. Asking her own son is not crossing a personal boundary.
People get way too offended today. Religion isn’t a private matter, especially in a family. Either of you could answer honestly, or you could be cold and aggressive.
I suggest the candid, honest answer, rather than treating your mother-in-law like you would a bank manager who asked you the same question. (And for the record, a bank manager did ask me once and we had a nice chat about it and neither of us were offended!)
